Morris Staff Pick Monday

Our registrar Stacey Thompson reflects on Edward Rice’s “The Mill” for Morris Staff Pick Monday. “I remember the first time I saw Edward Rice’s painting ‘The Mill”. The vibrancy of the colors, combined with the extreme verticality of the canvas, really drew me in. I love how the iconic Confederate Powderworks chimney, later part of the Sibley Textile Mill, extends off the canvas, as it’s reflection is mirrored in the waters of the canal. I have always been interested in the ways that the history of a place and the artist’s experience are interpreted through artistic expression. When I view this painting, I am reminded of the rich, yet dramatic history of Augusta.”
