Street Scenes: The Magical World of Robert Vickrey
May 12, 2018 - August 12, 2018
In the 1950s and 1960s Vickrey was a highly visible artist, included in no fewer than nine of the Whitney Museum’s annual exhibitions showcasing contemporary art. He was also commissioned to paint dozens of portraits for the cover of Time, notably a portrait from life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for the magazine’s Man of the Year issue in 1964.
His paintings are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Morris Museum of Art, as well as in numerous corporate and private collections. (Information from Vickrey’s obituary in the New York Times, April 20, 2011.) This exhibition was organized with the generous assistance of William Meek, longtime director of the Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida.
