Films on Friday Special Screening: Porgy and Bess (1959)
July 26 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
In conjunction with the exhibition The Charleston Renaissance, the Morris will host a special screening of a rarely-seen film version of Porgy and Bess, the “folk opera” by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward. The original production opened on stage in 1935 and was based on DuBose Heyward’s 1925 novel Porgy and the 1927 nonmusical stage adaptation that Heyward (the major literary figure of the Charleston Renaissance of the 1920s) had written with his wife, Dorothy. The film stars Sidney Poitier as Porgy, Dorothy Dandridge as Bess, Sammy Davis, Jr., Pearl Bailey, Brock Peters, Diahann Carroll, Claude Akins, Clarence Muse, and Ivan Dixon. Participants are invited to bring a lunch. FREE.
