Become a Docent!
2008 Docent Training
Volunteer docents lead interpretive tours at the Morris Museum of Art, conduct educational outreach programs, and participate in ongoing continuing education classes. While each docent must go through a rigorous training program, the rewards are great. Docent volunteers enjoy meeting students and members of the public and engaging museum visitors in learning experiences through the visual arts.
Docent training is an intensive program designed to provide docent candidates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to lead interpretive tours. The training is organized into discrete modules incorporated into a thirteen-week course. Trainees are expected to attend all training sessions and complete assigned readings and research assignments.
A docent in training will have the opportunity to meet several experienced docents. An experienced docent will be assigned to each candidate as a mentor for the provisional docent training program. The mentor accompanies the trainee on practice tours and on the first "live" tours.
The dates and times for the 2008 training class will be announced during spring 2008 to insure that candidates have advance notice and can plan to attend every session. Typically the course begins in September and concludes in December. Most training programs will be held in the auditorium, located on the first floor.
To enroll in the 2008 docent training class, contact associate curator of education (school programs) Sarah Alexander at 706-828-3867 or sarah.alexander@themorris.org for an application or fill out a volunteer questionnaire.
The deadline for applications is August 8, 2008, for the 2008 fall training class.
