Art at the Children's Medical Center - Archive

Morris Museum staff members have conducted workshops inspired by artwork in the permanent collection for extended and short-term patients at the Children's Medical Center at the Medical College of Georgia. In addition to making art, students learn about the artists whose work is displayed in the museum.

This program is sponsored by the Fred A. Moss Charitable Trust. Additional support is provided by J. Noel Schweers III, P.C., Marsh, Inc., Hull, Towill, Norman, Barrett & Salley, P.C., and by Club Car, Inc.

Examples of work created by artists at the Children's Medical Center may be viewed below.

Children at the MCG Children's Medical Center learned about abstract expressionist artist Ida Kohlmeyer and created a beaded necklace in response to one of her art works, Synthesis 90-A. The children learned about the artist's style of work, patterns, shapes, colors, and lines. After interpresting the art, they created beads in response to the shapes, colors, and patterns in the art. After creating the beads, the children added them to them to their colorful lanyards and tied both ends to create their necklace.

On September 13, 2005, students at the Children's Medical Center looked at the work of artist Ida Kohlmeyer (1912–1997). Kohlmeyer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Early in her career she studied with abstract expressionist artist Hans Hofmann. As a result, Kohlmeyer's work reflects this style of expressing oneself purely through the use of form and color without representing concrete objects. After viewing the sculpture by Ida Kohlmeyer, students at the Children's Medical Center created their own three-dimensional works.

On May 17, 2004, students at the Children's Medical Center looked at the work of artist Ida Kohlmeyer (1912–1997). Kohlmeyer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Early in her career she studied with abstract expressionist artist Hans Hofmann. As a result, Kohlmeyer's work reflects this style of expressing oneself purely through the use of form and color without representing concrete objects. After viewing the odd symbols or pictographs represented in paintings by Ida Kohlmeyer, such as Syntax 90-Z, students at the Children's Medical Center created pictures with their own pictographs. Then the students printed images of their drawings from a Styrofoam plate.

December 16 , 2002
On Monday, December 16, 2002, students at the Children's Medical Center looked at a painting entitled The Magi, by Terry Rowlett. Rowlett attended graduate school at the University of Georgia, earning an M.F.A. in painting and drawing. Having strong faith in religion, Rowlett's work serves as a way to communicate religious ideas to a contemporary audience. He often places religious or biblical images in a contemporary scene, and it is no surprise that the artist is known for his ability to tell stories. His paintings are very narrative in nature, so the students discussed what they thought was happening in the painting and developed their own stories around the image.

On June 17, 2002, students at the Children's Medical Center looked at the work of painter Jonathan Green (b. 1955) and photographer Jack Leigh (1948–2004). In creating their art, the artists reflect on their own sense of community. Students at the Children's Medical Center took photographs of their own community at the hospital—the people and places they have come to know. Then, they put their photos into a book that they decorated.
