Masterpiece Makeover

Masterpiece Makeover is a program that directs donations to the conservation of a specified work of art. This portrait of Henry Cumming requires cleaning and conservation. Aged and brittle, the paint surface shows craquelure—a fine pattern of dense cracking, its varnish has yellowed, and its frame is damaged.

Our goal to fix this painting is $5,000. All monies donated to the project will go directly to the restoration of this painting.

Why this piece? The portrait’s subject is Henry Harford Cumming (1799–1866), an important and influential figure in antebellum Augusta, Georgia. Cumming came from a long line of statesmen, war heroes, and politicians (his father was one of the first mayors of Augusta, after its incorporation as a city in 1798). Though a lawyer by trade, Cumming is best-known for conceiving and promoting the design and construction of the Augusta Canal in 1846, as well as for using the canal to develop Augusta as an industrial base for the region.

Memorials

A donation to the Morris Museum of Art is a meaningful way to remember and honor friends and loved ones and a wonderful way to support the Morris Museum's effort to preserve and enhance the rich cultural legacy of the South. These thoughtful gifts routinely go into the Acquisitions Fund to be applied to the purchase of a work of art for the museum's permanent collection, but you may designate them for other purposes as well. Please contact Kevin Grogan at the Morris Museum of Art.
