Thursday, September 1 family programs
10:00–11:00 a.m., or 11:15 a.m.–12:15 p.m. Toddler Time: Birds Everywhere! View works from the exhibition Naturalists in the South: Abbot, Audubon, Catesby, and Wilson and learn how artists and scientists observe the world. Afterwards, create a colored pencil and watercolor bird drawing. Museum family members and parents, free; nonmembers, $4 per participant. Registration required.

Friday, September 2 films
Noon. Films on Friday: The Great McGinty (1940). View this sharp political satire starring Brian Donlevy. Afterwards, museum director Kevin Grogan leads a discussion. FREE.

Sunday, September 11 family programs
2:00 p.m. Artrageous! Family Sunday: Around the Town with Mr. Bill. Join entertainer Mr. Bill as he celebrates our hometown with special songs and stories. Afterwards, make a painting inspired by our city’s landmarks. FREE.

Wednesday, September 14 special events
5:00–6:30 p.m. Educator Appreciation Night. Public and private school teachers, administrators, and support staff are invited to bring their family and friends for an evening of gallery tours, art activities, and light refreshments. FREE.

6:00 p.m. Southern Circuit Film Series: Concrete Steel & Paint. After viewing the movie, enjoy a question-and-answer session with codirectors and producers Cindy Burstein and Tony Heriza. Members, free; nonmembers, $3.00.

Friday, September 16 performances
7:30 p.m. Southern Soul & Song: Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. Grammy award–winning, multi-instrumentalist Marty Stuart, one of country music’s most accomplished and versatile performers, returns to the Imperial Theatre. Saturday, September 17 classes workshops
10:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Sunday, September 18, noon–4:30 p.m. Adult Artist Workshop: House Portraits in Watercolor. Painter Randy Lambeth demonstrates various techniques to paint architectural structures. All materials included. Members, $100; nonmembers, $115 per participant. Paid registration is required by September 12.

2:00 p.m. Music at the Morris: Angela Renée Simpson. Dramatic soprano Angela Renée Simpson presents a selection of arias, art songs, and spirituals. FREE.

2:00–3:30 p.m. Sunday Sketch. Sketch in the galleries, with materials supplied by the museum. Check-in in the activity room. FREE.

Thursday, September 22 special events
5:30–8:00 p.m. Exhibition Opening: Down South: Paintings by Art Rosenbaum, Photographs by Margo Newmark Rosenbaum. Celebrate the opening of Down South, featuring artwork by the 2011 Westobou Festival signature artist Art Rosenbaum and his wife, Margo Newmark Rosenbaum. The event includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, a 6:00 concert featuring the Skillet Lickers, and fun art projects. Free for museum members; nonmembers, $10.00. Call 706-724-7501 to RSVP.

Saturday, September 24 special events
10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Smithsonian Museum Day. Smithsonian Museum Day provides Augustans and visitors to the city an opportunity to celebrate culture and explore the area’s diverse attractions for FREE one day only. Must present free pass. Sunday, September 25 lectures
2:00 p.m. Lecture: Preservation of Place. Director Kevin Grogan moderates a panel discussion about the development of the exhibition Preservation of Place and the accompanying catalogue with artist Edward Rice, noted art critic Jeffrey Day, art historian Martha R. Severens, and gallery owner Wim Roefs. Reception and book signing with the speakers to follow. FREE. 

Friday, September 30 lectures
Noon. Art at Lunch: Down South. Artists Margo Newmark Rosenbaum and Art Rosenbaum discuss their works included in the exhibition Down South. Members, $10; nonmembers, $14. Lunch by Fat Man’s Cafe. Paid reservations due September 28.
